Comparison

Finance & Operations vs.

Honest comparisons we walk every prospect through before quoting. If you’re on the wrong side of the line, we’ll tell you.

F&O vs. Dynamics 365 Business Central

F&O is the right call above ~$200M revenue, 4+ legal entities, multi-country operations, or process manufacturing. Below that, Business Central delivers 80% of the functionality at 30% of the implementation cost. Don't buy F&O for status — buy it for scope.

F&O vs. SAP S/4HANA

S/4HANA wins on deep manufacturing variance and embedded analytics in highly process-heavy industries (chemicals, pharma, automotive OEM). F&O wins on time-to-value, native Microsoft 365 / Power Platform / Azure integration, and total cost of ownership for organizations not already invested in SAP.

F&O vs. Oracle Cloud ERP / NetSuite

Oracle Cloud ERP plays in the same enterprise tier as F&O, with stronger out-of-box global tax. NetSuite is a step below F&O in capability but easier to deploy. F&O is the right call when Power Platform, Azure, and Microsoft 365 are already strategic — not as a Salesforce-style category leader play.

Pricing

What it costs — the honest version.

Get a fixed scope

F&O is licensed by module. Dynamics 365 Finance is $210/user/month (USD list, 2026), Supply Chain Management is $210/user/month, and the first Dynamics 365 app per user qualifies for full price with subsequent attached apps at $30/user/month. Activity (Team Member) users are $8/user/month. A minimum of 20 full users per tenant applies. Implementation services for tier-1 deployments typically range $750K–$5M+ depending on entity count, geographies, and integration depth. Plan a full 9–18 month timeline for first go-live.

How we deploy

4 phases. Fixed scope. No drift.

01

Strategy

F&O programs fail at the strategy layer, not the configuration layer. We start with a 4–6 week assessment: target operating model, entity rollout sequence, integration architecture, and a phased business case the CFO and CIO both sign.

02

Design

Conference Room Pilots against your real data and real users. We use Microsoft's Success by Design framework: solution blueprint, integration design, data migration design, and security model — all reviewed before build starts.

03

Build & Deploy

Iterative builds in Azure DevOps with automated regression tests via RSAT. Two full mock cutovers before go-live. We pilot in a single entity or geography, stabilize, then template the rollout.

04

Operate & Optimize

Managed service post-go-live: release wave management, performance tuning, ISV upgrades, and a backlog of optimizations driven by actual usage data from Application Insights.

FAQ

Questions we field weekly.

If yours isn’t here, ask in the consultation. We’ve probably answered it five times this month.

What's the realistic timeline and cost for a tier-1 F&O implementation?
First go-live for a single entity in a single geography is typically 9–14 months and $750K–$2M in services. Multi-entity, multi-country rollouts with manufacturing run 18–36 months and $3M–$10M+. Anyone quoting you a 6-month enterprise F&O deployment is selling Business Central, scoping out critical functionality, or both. We're transparent about timeline at scoping — schedule and cost certainty come from rigorous fit/gap, not from optimistic Gantt charts.
We're on Dynamics AX 2012. Should we upgrade to F&O or look elsewhere?
AX 2012 is out of mainstream support and limited security updates run until early 2026. The migration path to F&O is well-trodden but it's a re-implementation, not an in-place upgrade. The good news: years of AX customizations often reveal which were truly necessary — most clients standardize on more out-of-box F&O than they ran in AX. Treat it as a chance to clean up, not just a lift-and-shift. Plan 12–24 months and budget accordingly.
How does F&O compare to SAP S/4HANA for manufacturing?
S/4HANA still has the edge in deeply process-heavy industries — chemicals, automotive OEM, large-scale pharma — where decades of manufacturing variance logic matter. F&O is competitive and often superior for discrete manufacturing, mid-complexity process, and any operation where tight Microsoft 365 / Power Platform / Azure integration is a strategic asset. The honest answer: pick F&O if you're a Microsoft shop, S/4HANA if you're an SAP shop. Switching ecosystems for the ERP alone rarely pays off.
How does Microsoft handle releases and updates in F&O?
Microsoft ships two service updates per year (April and October release waves) plus monthly platform updates. Updates apply automatically to non-production environments first, with about 30 days to validate before production. Our managed service includes regression test execution against each wave using Microsoft's RSAT framework. The cadence is faster than on-prem ERPs but predictable — and customizations built as proper extensions ride the waves cleanly.
Can F&O handle multi-entity consolidation across countries?
Yes. F&O supports unlimited legal entities, multi-currency, multi-book (e.g. parallel GAAP/IFRS), country-specific localizations for 40+ regions, intercompany accounting, and consolidation natively. For finance teams running consolidations in HFM, OneStream, or Excel today, Microsoft offers Dynamics 365 Finance with embedded financial reporting plus Power BI for analytical reporting. Some enterprises still pair F&O with a dedicated EPM tool — we'll help you decide where the line sits.
What about integrations to our existing systems?
F&O integrates via OData and custom services for synchronous calls, Data Management Framework for bulk file-based exchange, and Business Events / Azure Service Bus for asynchronous integration. Dual-write keeps F&O and Dataverse (CRM, Customer Service, Sales) synchronized. We've integrated F&O with Salesforce, ServiceNow, Coupa, Concur, Workday, ADP, MES platforms, and dozens of WMS systems. The right pattern depends on data volume, latency tolerance, and whether the integration is bi-directional.
